Emily C. Murriel, Ph.D., is a clinical neuropsychologist and Assistant Professor in the Division of Medical Psychology in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. She received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Boston University. She then completed her master’s and doctoral degrees at the University of Victoria, where she was awarded the prestigious Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship through the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and a Mitacs Globalink research fellowship to serve as an industry consultant in South America. She went on to complete her internship at the Charleston Consortium (Medical University of South Carolina and the Ralph H. Johnson Veterans Medical Center) and a three-year clinical and research neuropsychology post-doctoral fellowship at the Johns Hopkins Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. She joined the faculty in 2022 and is currently an Assistant Professor and leader of the Transplant Neuropsychology Service (TNS) within the Division of Medical Psychology.
Dr. Murriel’s clinical expertise is in the evaluation of adults who are at risk for neuropsychological complications due to illness and medical treatments. Through the TNS, Dr. Murriel provides pre- and post-solid organ transplant patients neuropsychological evaluations as well as brief health and behavioral interventions. Dr. Murriel also has expertise in cultural neuropsychology, including extensive experience in working with patients from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
Her program of research is guided and motivated by her work with her patients. This includes exploring the associations between physical and neuropsychological functioning among healthy and medically ill individuals and developing valid and reliable neuropsychological tools and frameworks. She is also extensively involved in professional governance and promoting neuropsychology education, including serving as a founding member of KnowNeuropsychology, past Chair of the Society for Clinical Neuropsychology’s (SCN) Association of Neuropsychology Students and Trainees, and served on the SCN Strategic Planning Committee and the Minnesota 2022 Update Conference on Education and Training in Clinical Neuropsychology’s Planning Commission.
